ECB's Coeuré: Measures on Greek debt in the right direction

Benoit Coeuré, Member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank (ECB), said on Tuesday in an interview with French newspaper Le Figaro that the sacrifices of the Greek society have borne fruit.

"This is a turning point for Greece and Europe. Greece is now free from European surveillace. The sacrifices of the Greek society, supported by European solidarity, have yielded fruit. For those who have doubts about this solidarity, I would like to emphasize that Europe has provided Greece with 245 billion euro funding", Coeure said.

"I particularly admire the determination and courage of Greek Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos. Greece will also get a clear boost from the debt relief promised by European governments for a long time. The ECB was clearly in favour of this relief. The measures decided in the Eurogroup are in the right direction because they will make the Greek debt sustainable in the medium term and the ministers expressed their willingness in the long term to take further action if the need arises," he said.
