A long-term solution on migration requires a «holistic approach», Tsipras tells FT

«The EU’s existing rule book for allocating responsibility for asylum-seekers, known as the Dublin regulation, is 'out of life'», Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said on Thursday in an interview with the Financial Times.

"We have to find a way, in the framework of the international law, to share the burden and to not have this unfair position for the frontline countries but also for Germany," he said. "Because it is not fair all these people to go to Germany, if we believe that this is a European problem."

In an interview with the Financial Times, Tsipras said he was open to a special agreement with Berlin to curtail the “secondary movement” of refugees that arrive at the EU’s southern border but then journey north to Germany.

Greece’s prime minister is ready to strike a deal with Angela Merkel to make it easier for Germany to send asylum seekers back to other European countries, giving the embattled chancellor an important boost before a crucial EU summit.

Moreovoer, he said that a long-term solution could only come through a “holistic approach” encompassing reform of border control, internal arrangements for handling people who reach the EU, co-operation arrangements with non-EU countries, and legal migration opportunities.
