Police arrest four known anti-establishment activists heading to Thessaloniki

Police have arrested four known anti-establishment activists travelling north on the Athens-Thessaloniki national highway after finding sledgehammers, gas-masks, helmets and other suspicious objects in their car during a stop-and-search late on Thursday.

The four suspects, one of which is known to the counter-terrorism squad from previous brushes with the law, claimed that they were intending to guard anarchist protests taking place in Thessaloniki.

The four were stopped at the Afidnes road tolls on Thursday night. They include a 16-year-old boy and a 27-year-old arrested in 2014 for weapons possession (handgun, Kalashnikov rifle, hand grenade) and investigated for possible involvement in terrorist actions, although nothing was found. The others are aged 26 and 25 years old, respectively, while all four are known to be active in the anti-establishment community.

The four will be led before a public prosecutor.
