Polytechnic uprising is an inspiration for our future struggles, Education Min says

"The Polytechnic uprising on November 17, 1973, is a day of remembrance for those who fought, for those killed for freedom, and constitutes an inspiration for our future struggles.

This day reminds us that democracy is not self-evident, but it concerns all of us and depends on our daily preparedness to serve it, protect it and defend it," Education Minister Costas Gavroglou said on Thursday ahead of the anniversary of the Athens Polytechnic uprising.

He stressed that November 17 was the "most massive and critical moment of resistance against dictatorship" and "a thunderous voice against the fascism of a stinging dictatorship."

The uprising with the students on the forefront was embraced by the people, expressing the general anti-dictatorial spirit," Gavroglou said in the message and added: "Bread - Education - Freedom" was the slogan of the students in their demand for a better future, for the right of everyone to education and democracy."

"Now that the ghosts of totalitarianism reappear in Europe and elsewhere, the legacy of the Polytechnic uprising, as a reminder of all our responsibility for resistance, is once again timely," he concluded.
