Draft bill lowering insurance payments for self-employed passes parliamentary committee

A draft bill reducing insurance contributions by the self-employed sailed through the Greek Parliament's Committee of Social Affairs on Tuesday.

Labor Minister Efi Achtsioglou called it "real evidence the (bailout) memoranda and public finance restrictions have ended."

She added that the reductions will benefit 250,000 self-employed, and that this step is the first of several to relieve different segments of Greek society. Future measures will be directed towards subsidising rents of families, retroactive wage payments to members of security forces including the military and police and fire officers, and measures helping freelance workers and farmers.

Achtsioglou also criticized main opposition New Democracy (ND) for 12 wage reductions when it was in power, to which rapporteur Yiannis Vroutsis responded, "The minister has neglected to refer to the strong criticism by agencies, lawyers and scientists who have accused the government of constant mistakes these past 2.5 years. You harmed the productive sector of the Greek economy, you punished it and created distortions in the economy."
