Labor Min. Vroutsis: Syn-Ergasia plan to aid businesses, guarantee employee wages and benefits

The government will stand beside every employee to the end of the coronavirus crisis, Labor and Social Affairs Minister Yiannis Vroutsis told Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA), asserting that in 2021 "we will recover lost ground both in growth and in jobs."

In an interview, Vroutsis did not downplay the negative repercussions of the pandemic's economic and social fallout, which is global, but said that in Greece the government "moved fast to first protect human life, then to protect the economy and social cohesion."

A tsunami of layoffs would have led to the labor market's collapse was prevented, he told ANA-MPA, although the expected seasonal jobs in the tourism and food sectors did not materialize in March and April, as expected annually.

He then detailed how the Syn-Ergasia plan will work to help businesses while obliging them to safeguard all jobs and insurance contributions by employers while allowing no contractual changes. Funding will be provided partly through the EU's SURE funding tool. Initially, the Labor minister said, Greece will receive 1.4 billion euros for the program that will run from June 1 to September 1.

Businesses will be able to participate regardless of size or activity, as long as they can show a loss of 20 pct turnover for two or more months in a row starting with March figures. He also detailed the subsidies to be received by employees whose working schedule is reduced, reaching 100 pct for those with the lowest incomes. Insurance obligations by employers will be calculated on a reduced scale as of June 1, he added, as foreseen in the social insurance reform law 4670/2020.
