Fires and clashes with police in Exarchia after Grigoropoulos march

Violence erupted in the Exarchia district around the Athens Polytechnic building late on Wednesday, when groups of youths attacked MAT riot police with firebombs, stones and flares.

The violence followed a protest march held in Athens to commemorate the murder of 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos in 2008.

The violence started at 20:00 when the march reached the corner of Mesolongiou and Tzavella Street where Grigoropoulos was shot and killed. Youths wearing hoods and helmets attacked police, with clashes spreading to nearby Stournari, Bouboulina, Tositsa, George and Kallidromiou streets. They also erected barricades using rubbish bins and set fires, torching rubbish bins and a car parked on Bouboulinas Street.

Police have responded with so far restrained use of tear gas.
