Parliament passes local government reform bill, laws splitting Attica constituencies
The draft bill on the 'Kleisthenes' reform plan for Greek local authorities was passed in Parliament late on Thursday with 150 votes in favour and 123 votes against.
Articles 28 and 56 that established simple proportional representation in municipal and regional elections were passed with 161 votes in favour and 111 votes against while an amendment to split up the large Attica Region and 2nd Athens electoral constituencies received almost universal support, with 241 votes in favour and just 31 votes opposed.
Since the amendment received more than 200 votes, it will be implemented in the next elections.
An amendment to hold simultaneous local government and European Parliament elections was also passed by 149 votes in favour, 122 votes against and one abstention.
