Woman arrested for injuring babies to be tried on July 25

A 55-year-old woman arrested and charged with inflicting injuries on small babies is to be tried before a Misdemeanours Police Court on July 25.

The court decided to postpone the trial during a hearing on Friday, during which the mothers of three of the assaulted infants stated their intention to file civil suits against the accused.

The court also accepted the parents' request that the defendant undergo additional medical screening to discover whether she suffers from any communicable diseases.

A police officer informed the court that the woman has been committed to the Dromokaitio Psychiatric Hospital for 48 hours, so that doctors can build up a fuller picture of her mental condition.

The 55-year-old is accused of approaching mothers with babies at shopping malls in the southern suburbs of Athens and inflicting deep scratches on the infants' hands and feet, possibly with her nails. She has been charged with inflicting unprovoked bodily harm and resisting arrest and has denied both charges.
