Two killed after being hit by train in Alexandroupolis

A train in Alexandroupolis hit and killed two people late Friday while they were walking on the train line, a commonly used route for illegal migrants entering the country, police said.

The driver told police that he tried to stop the train when he saw the two people sleeping on the railway line but did not manage to stop in time. The two people are likely to have been illegal immigrants that snuck into Greece from Turkey via the Evros area.

In a separate incident, a third person was also seriously injured after being hit by a train in the same area and was in hospital in Evros with serious injuries.
