Kammenos: If Prespes Agreement comes to parliament, I will resign as Defence Minister

Defence Minister and Independent Greeks (ANEL) leader Panos Kammenos referred to the Prespes Agreement and to issues of the Greece's geopolitical strengthening in his statements on Thursday during his visit to the 1st Army Division in Larissa.

"Greece was geopolitically upgraded thanks to its Armed Forces," noted Kammenos clarifying that Greece's upgraded role has allowed it to "sign and obtain contracts with the largest companies from all over the world to drill the natural underwater and underground wealth of Greece". Moreover, Greece has now signed contracts with major companies like ExxonMobil and Total, he said, adding "research for natural gas in all areas of western Greece and the Ionian Sea and in the south of Crete will start shortly".

Kammenos made a special reference to the developments regarding the Greece-FYROM Prespes Agreement, reiterating his position that he will resign as Defence Minister and his party will withdraw from the government coalition if the agreement comes to Greek parliament.

Asked whether he expects national elections in the spring or autumn, Kammenos said, "I believe that there elections should not occur soon. The Skopje issue came, despite our agreement with SYRIZA to govern together, earlier than initially planned." He added that the country's best interest would be if elections are "held at the end of the government's term."

"On our part, we will do whatever possible for that, but you understand that some issue constitute for us a red line and I can't, due to my office and to my public position, to accept being Defence Minister and at the same time deliver the name "Macedonia". This is something I will never do," he stated.
