Human traffickers arrested; illegal entry of roughly 130 refugees averted at Evros river

Greek police on Wednesday announced that the illegal entry of 130 refugees and migrants to Greece through the Evros River via the Greek-Turkish borders had been averted on Tuesday.

Specifially in two separate incidents in Evros, police intercepted and arrested a total of 11 persons who had illegally entered the country using dinghies, however the traffickers' arrest averted the entry of approximately 130 more persons that were waiting on Turkish side of the border for the traffickers to return and collect them.

In the first case, the border police arrested a 23-year-old who attempted to cross Evros river with a dinghy and eight refugees on board.

The second incident was reported at Lavara when Didymoticho border police arrested another 23-year-old and a 19-year-old that were crossing the river with a dinghy and three migrants on board.

The suspects arrested were sent before public prosecutors.
