ICOMOS speaks to ANA: Vigilance needed for the protection of monuments

The terrible fire in Notre Dame shows the vulnerability of the monuments and makes the catastrophic event looks even more tragic a day before the International Day for Monuments and Sites.

The Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA) spoke with two representatives of ICOMOS (International Council of Monuments and Sites), an agency that is the official UNESCO Technical Adviser on World Heritage.

Sofia Avgerinou - Cologne, Vice President of Hellenic ICOMOS: We express solidarity by offering know-how

"From the very first moment of the tragic event, ICOMOS's international network was mobilised to express its solidarity with French colleagues by offering know-how. Among them, the Hellenic ICOMOS sent its own message of solidarity and support."

Gustavo Araoz, Honorary President of ICOMOS: A lot of work is needed

"The French authorities are still in the early diagnosis phase. There are some encouraging elements, the stained glass is in place. Photographs show that they have been rescued, especially the stained glass of the northern and southern parts of the temple. They are the oldest and extremely valuable. But the situation has to be assessed, the windows may have been weakened by the fire. A lot of work is needed. We must first identify and acknowledge the problems, then decide the best way to restore the building to its old glamour, which will undoubtedly happen."
