The viral load in Thessaloniki's wastewater has not dramatically increased

The latest sample of Thessaloniki urban wastewater analysed for the concentration of SARS-CoV-2 has confirmed the picture that emerged from the two previous measurements, according to the research conducted by an interdisciplinary team of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) in collaboration with the Thessaloniki Water and Sewage Company (EYATH), the team announced on Friday.

"We do not have an explosive growth rate, we are not talking at the moment about a dramatic deterioration of the epidemiological picture in our city. We are at a point where increased vigilance and lightning reflexes are required in the evaluation of the daily data," said the AUTh rector and scientific director of the research project Prof. Nikos Papaioannou, explaining that "precisely because of how crucial it is to have data and because of the accuracy this must have, so that the state can take the right decisions at any given time, in collaboration with EYATH we decided today to take an additional sample of wastewater, for which we will have the results of the analysis later in the day."
