Settlement evacuated near Soufli after fire breaks out in pine forest
The settlement of Lefkimmi, Soufli in NE Greece was evacuated on Friday following a fire that broke out in the pine forest next to it.
According to Deputy Director for the Region of Evros Dimitris Petrovits, "the fire is out of control in the northern sector of the settlement."
The fire broke out in the afternoon, and firefighters are battling the blaze by ground and air forces with the help of the Armed Forces.
It is burning in the region of the national sanctuary of Dadia-Lefkimmi, one of the most important natural environments on European and international level, home to the only colony of black vultures (Aegypius monachus) in the Balkans.
