SYRIZA leader Tsipras urges government to take measures ahead on heatwave

SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance leader Alexis Tsipras spoke on the phone with the director and chairman of the Board of the Athens Observatory, Professor Manolis Pleionis, "in view of the unprecedented heat wave that will hit our country in the coming days."

Tsipras noted in a post on Facebook that "the State must listen to the warnings of the experts. They are of the opinion that large urban centers will face serious problems and may need to declare a public holiday on critical working days, especially next Monday, in order to keep the population protected," he said.

In any case, the leader of the main opposition said that "the state mechanism must be prepared in time. The Public Power Corporation must ensure the uninterrupted supply of electricity throughout the territory, as the overload of the network is considered a given. While the bodies of the local government must provide for air-conditioned areas for the citizens."

Tsipras pointed out that "the climate crisis is here and threatens us", adding that "there is no longer any excuse for surprises. We must organize our defence in time against its consequences. Above all, however, to act with a plan, in order to deal with the causes that cause it."
