The meeting was held on Saturday evening at 18:00 as part of the Patriarch's official visit to Athens, following an invitation extended by the Church of Greece to mark the 30th anniversary since Bartholomew ascended to the Patriarchal throne.

The two prelates had a lengthy meeting, including a private discussion lasting 45 minutes on the pandemic and issues relating to the Orthodox Church in the face of the challenges of the new age, such as recognition by the Greek church of the autocephalous nature of the Ukrainian church and its repercussions.

The Patriarch thanked Ieronymos for the invitation to visit Greece and expressed hope that "we will always walk in peace, mutual love and admirable cooperation for the good of our Churches, the good of the Orthodox faith and the Greek people."
