Economou: Support measures for the fire stricken to be announced later on Thursday
The climate crisis is visible throughout Europe with emphasis in the Mediterranean. The cocktail of high temperatures, gale-force winds and very dry conditions inevitably leads to wildfires, government spokesperson Yiannis Economou stated at a press briefing on Thursday.
"It is impossible to avoid wildfires and the subsequent damage but we are more efficient both in their prevention and management and in the protection of human lives, property and public infrastructure," he said.
Additionally, Economou said, difficult situations are arising in the last few days due to wildfires that start in conditions that help them spread rapidly. Only in the last week we had 390 forest fires and the fire brigade has to deal with 50-70 wildfires every day. Especially the fire in Penteli was very difficult as it reached rapidly the urban fabric.
Finally, Economou said that support measures for the fire stricken will be announced on Thursday evening.
