PM Mitsotakis: AI tools can help teachers become more productive
A memorandum of cooperation between the Greek government, OpenAI, and the Onassis Foundation for the implementation of a pilot programme introducing artificial intelligence tools into education was signed on Friday in Thessaloniki. At the event "AI in Schools: Artificial Intelligence in Education", Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis spoke online with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
Mitsotakis referred to the transformative use of AI technologies in education. He said that the programme aims "to help teachers better organise their lessons, understand the difficulties in managing students who learn at different speeds, relieve them of bureaucratic burdens, and allow them to focus on teaching."The Greek premier added that the use of AI tools can really help teachers and students become more productive. "The real question is how we can integrate these tools in a way that enhances learning in a completely different way," he added.
The programme will be experimentally implemented within the school year in 20 public high schools, as well as in model and public Onassis schools.
The memorandum of cooperation was signed by the Minister of Education, Religious Affairs, and Sports Sofia Zacharaki; the president of the Onassis Foundation Antonis Papadimitriou; and, on behalf of OpenAI, the Chief Global Affairs Officer, Chris Lehane, and the Head of Education and Government GTM, Kevin Mills.
