Two Chinese nationals arrested in connection with Istanbul’s New Year’s Eve mass shooting
On Friday (13/01/2017), Turkish authorities arrested two Chinese nationals of Uighur descent suspected of being involved in the New Year’s Eve mass shooting in Istanbul that claimed 39 lives, Anadolu news agency reports.
The two suspects, Omar Asim and Abuliezi Abuduhamiti, have been remanded to custody on suspicion of being members of a terrorist group.
Their arrest follows last week’s announcement that the suspect or suspects in the Islamic State-organized attack may have been of Uighur origin.
A total of 35 people have been detained so far, several Uighurs among them, Turkish media reported.
he Uighurs are a Muslim minority inhabiting Western China who speak a Turkic language and have diasporas across Turkey and Central Asia.
