Tsipras' interview to TGRT Haber: 'We can coexist without fear and hatred'

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, in an interview with the Turkish TV station TGRT Haber, said that his visit to Turkey was an important moment for Greek-Turkish relations and once again urged the EU to support the two countries in addressing the refugee crisis.

Tsipras pointed to the need for peaceful coexistence between the two countries, revealing that one of his grandparents was born in Istanbul. The interview with the Greek prime minister will be broadcast in full on Sunday.

In the excerpt presented on Friday, Tsipras referred to his visit to the Theological School of Halki and said that the two countries will have taken "a new step" toward living together peacefully if the Theological School reopens.

Tsipras repeated what he had said in the joint press conference with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan about the refugee issue, namely that the EU should support Turkey.

He also referred to the common features shared by Greeks and Turks, such as food, music and elements of their culture, adding that both people must live alongside each other in a peaceful and friendly environment.
