Refugees remain camped outside Diavata refugee facility, threaten to make for border

A group of about 500 refugees, including families with small children, were camped outside the Diavata refugee reception facility on Friday morning, having spent the night in tents camped outside the facility in the former Anagnostopoulou army base, lighting fires to keep warm.

The refugees had started arriving in the area on Thursday afternoon, responding to a call on social media about a group march to the border. Police mobilised to bar their way and clashes ensued when refugees tried to break through a police cordon, during which one police officer was injured, one person was detained and a 37-year-old Iraqi man was arrested for resisting arrest and attempting to inflict bodily harm.

A strong police force remained on the scene on Friday and has closed off a perimeter around the facility, as the refugees have declared their intention to make for the border. According to migration policy ministry sources "some asylum seekers have unfortunately been led astray by misinformation that has recently circulated via the social media networks, in spite of warnings from the administrations at the facilities."

The same sources called on those that responded to the "irresponsible call for a march to the borders to return to the reception facilities and on no account stray beyond the boundaries of legality."
