Tsakalotos stresses that government has restored its credibility
Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos during his speech at a political event in Ioannina on Thursday stressed that the government has restored its credibility and is now in a position to announce important measures.
He also outlined his views on the four dilemmas that now present themselves in the economy and society.
The first dilemma was the political system, Tsakalotos said. "We want this political system to become more democratic and more transparent," he underlined, while pointing out that before 2009 the political system was somewhat "fixed".
"The political system was locked. The truth is that, had we not had this crisis, we could not have corrected it. We needed a crisis to understand how the system was working," he said.
The second dilemma was the debate about the middle class that needs improvement in many areas. The middle class, he stressed, has nothing to expect from (main opposition New Democracy leader Kyriakos) Mitsotakis.
The third dilemma, said Tsakalotos, was the rise of the far right, which does not have a social or economic programme to help either the excluded people or the middle class.
"The far-right should not be tackled with insults but by addressing the social roots on which they are building their policy," the minister said.
The fourth dilemma, according to Tsakalotos, "what kind of Europe we want and what we can realistically hope for."
