Achtsioglou: The government has taken all measures to react against Turkish actions at an EU level

The government has taken all the necessary measures to react against Turkish actions at an EU level, Labour Minister and SYRIZA spokesperson Effie Achtsioglou said on Tuesday in an interview with ANT1 TV.

She added that the prime minister is willing to brief political leaders.

"Greece, in co-operation with the Republic of Cyprus, is ready to demand, if there is no de-escalation, the imposition of sanctions on the part of the EU on Turkey," she stated. "The prime minister himself has stated that, in addition to Foreign Minister George Katrougalos' briefing, he is at the disposal of any other political leader," she added.

Achtsioglou linked Europe's coordinated response to recent Greek foreign policy. "The fact that we can have such a concerted action at the level of Europe against this Turkish provocation is precisely the result of the foundations that the Greek government has been able to create in international affairs in recent years, thanks to its multidimensional foreign policy. "It is one of the few cases where we see such a rapid reaction on the part of the EU institutions. Within the week there will be very specific announcements or conclusions from the European institutions," she said.

"On our part, in co-operation with the Republic of Cyprus, we are ready to ask, if there is no de-escalation, the imposition of sanctions on the part of the EU on Turkey," she noted, adding that the government's target was always a multidimensional foreign policy and the extension of diplomatic ties.

On her part, main opposition New Democracy (ND) spokesperson Sofia Zacharaki asked for accountability and calmness "instead of actions seeking to impress".

"Turkey, for many months now, continues to criticise the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus. Not having recognised the law of the sea, we all realise that it is creating a difficult situation. The fact that it has stepped up the challenges in the Aegean is also a reality. We have an excess and an unprecedented record of Turkish challenges," she added.
