The body has not yet been identified, the sources added, while the site has been cordoned off by police.
Authorities have launched an investigation to identify the remains of a dead woman, whose body was found on Tuesday by a local resident in a cave on the island of Crete, in the municipality of Platania.
The body was found 10 km from the spot where police were conducting an investigation to find 60-year-old American biologist Suzanne Eaton, who was reported missing on July 2.
The area where the body was found has been cordoned off but police have not yet officially confirmed that the body belongs to the missing biologist nor revealed the cause of death. An EMAK emergency rescue team has been called in to retrieve the body.
