Kara Tepe facility to be returned to municipality on May 6, after 620 asylum seekers depart

A total of 620 asylum seekers at the Kara Tepe municipal facility for refugees and asylum-seekers in Mytilene, Lesvos have been transferred elsewhere, while Migration and Asylum Minister Notis Mitarachi will officially return the site to the municipality of Mytilene on May 6, to be used for municipality purposes.

According to migration and asylum ministry sources, a total of 540 people were transferred from Kara Tepe to KYT, the nearby temporary hosting facility, while another 80 were sent to a hosting facility on the mainland.

The population at KYT, including the recent additions from Kara Tepe, is under 6,000 while the total number of asylum seekers living on Lesvos is 7,200.
