Alexis Tsipras: Mitsotakis has forsaken western Greece
SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance leader Alexis Tsipras expressed strong criticism against the government on Monday over what he called indifference for Elis Prefecture, citing the shutdown of university departments, the Patras-Pyrgos road project and the state of hospitals in the region.
The main opposition leader accused the government of "writing off" the prefecture and its residents, charging that it focuses "only on serving interests in the economy and education sectors."
"In the midst of the pandemic, the Mitsotakis government decided to go ahead with a reduction by a third of the number of students admitted to state universities," the party leader said, leaving nearly 25,000-30,000 students who could have entered under last year's admissions numbers without options and "condemned to fail." This policy leads to shutting down departments at universities and denying regional students a chance to study "in order to benefit private colleges," he said. Two such departments to shut down in the prefecture were the Museology one in Pyrgos and the Agronomy one in Amaliada.
In addition, he charged, the government is "completely indifferent" to western Greece and Elis in particular, "where it received completed contracts in 2019 and construction sites in operation on the Patras-Pyrgos road, which has been postponed and will not be ready even in five years." The government's disregard is also shown in the lack of care for health infrastructure as well, he claimed, and other aspects of the western Greek region.
