UN: Disapproval of mass death sentence in Egypt
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said today that the death sentences imposed massively Islamists in Egypt is outrageous because the trials did not meet even the most basic legal rules.
"The death penalty can be imposed only for the most heinous crimes and if they are ensured the most stringent guarantees of a fair trial," stressed the UN official.
"It is outrageous that for the second time in two months, (...) Al Minya court imposed the death penalty on a numerically huge group of defendants after the conducting of trial just for the types" she said.
"The time has come to Egypt to take serious account of the commitments relating to Human Rights" she added.
According to the information gathered by the UN, the 683 defendants were tried among others, for the murder of a policeman and that stormed the police station
Entoua in Minya, on 14 August 2013.
