Students and teachers to hold protest rally in Athens

High school and university students, teachers and Athens University administrative employees on Thursday, 6/11/2014 at noon will hold a rally in Propylea, downtown Athens, against planned changes for lyceums and the exam topics pool.

“We are resisting the policy of mobility and lay-offs, we are defending our jobs and our lives,” the Athens University administrative employees association said in a statement, demanding the annulment of the mobility scheme and the return of suspended administrative employees to their posts.

“Along with students and other parts of the academic community, we are resisting the attack against the public university and its intended transformation into an authoritarian institution without its academic, scientific and democratic characteristics. We demand immediate solutions to the urgent, pressing problems of the University, the employees and the students,” it added.

Students have started protests in the form of sit-ins at schools since last Monday.
