Golden Dawn MP Barbaroussis charged with incitement to high treason

Extreme-right Golden Dawn (GD) deputy Constantinos Barbaroussis - who created an uproar in Parliament on Friday when he called on the army to arrest the president, the prime minister and the defense minister for "high treason" - is being prosecuted on charges of incitement to high treason.

The charge was announced by Prosecutor Giorgos Kaloudis, appointed by the Supreme Court (Areios Pagos) to review the case.

Kaloudis took testimony from the minister and alternate minister of National Defence, Panos Kammenos and Fotis Kouvelis, who had filed a lawsuit against Barbaroussis, and after charging Barbaroussis sent the file to the investigating prosecutor. The latter will decide whether the deputy will be arrested on the basis of the 24-hour window provided by the law (as in flagrante delicto) or summon him to testify.

According to the penal code, the punishment for incitement to high treason is a minimum of five years in jail, while that for high treason is life imprisonment or a shorter sentence. For such charges, justice does not require Parliament permission to prosecute.

Barbaroussis was expelled from the parliamentary group by the GD leader Nikos Michaloliakos; he retains his seat as an independent deputy.
