Skopje name agreement with Greece heads to parliament

The cabinet of Skopje approved on Monday the draft bill to be tabled in its parliament that will ratify the agreement with Greece resolving the name issue.

The agreement was signed on Sunday by Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and his Skopje counterpart Zoran Zaev at Psarades in the Prespes Lake region.

According to procedure, the parliament will convene at 11:00 am local time on Tuesday to discuss the need to adopt the ratification, a preliminary step that requires a simple majority. It will then be brought before the plenum, which must vote on it by Friday.

Political analysts and mass media at Skopje foresee that the bill will sail through all stages.

Following its ratification by parliament, it must be submitted to Skopje President Gjorge Ivanov for signing within seven days. In the event he vetoes the agreement, it returns to parliament, where it must be adopted by absolute majority, or 61 deputies. In that event it is resent to the president, who is obliged by the constitution to sign it.
