Zagoraios to remain until investigation into Mati fire complete, Supreme Court prosecutor decides
Supreme Court Prosecutor Xeni Dimitriou on Tuesday gave orders that the head of the first-instance court prosecutors Ilias Zagoraios should remain in his position until the investigation into the July 23 fire in Mati is completed.
Zagoraios, who was due to vacate the position on October 1, will stay on and take over the investigation personally.
Following the deadly fires that left 99 people dead, Zagoraios had elected to handle the criminal investigation himself, with the assistance of his colleague Varvara Gnesouli.
Sources noted that the document sent by Dimitriou relating to a probe being conducted by the General Inspector of Public Administration was in no way intended to delay the investigation by Zagoraios. It merely intended to inform him about the specific actions so that he might seek it out, in connection with the material already in his possession, the sources said.
Supreme Court sources, meanwhile, noted that Dimitriou's action was in no way interpreted as stalling the investigation and that it was absolutely left to the discretion of Zagoraios to decide whether to proceed with the next crucial step of the investigation, which was to summon suspects for various offences.
