Weather service warns of 'Orestes' storm system arriving on Monday

A new storm system that the 'meteo' weather service at the National Observatory of Athens has dubbed 'Orestes' is approaching Greece from the Ionian Sea, bringing heavy rain to most parts of the country on Monday.

The weather will start to deteriorate from Sunday afternoon as the storm moves eastward and will be particularly intense in the Ionian and western mainland, where rain may be accompanied by hail.

Strong winds ranging to 6-8 Beaufort are expected in the Ionian Sea on Monday and temperatures will drop in the coming week, especially in northern Greece.

Strong rain will continue into the middle of next week, possibly with snow at higher altitudes in the north, while strong winds reaching up to gale-force speeds are forecast in the Aegean. According to meteo, the weather is expected to improve from Wednesday afternoon but may worsen again at the end of the week.
