ND leader Mitsotakis speaks at International Transparency – Hellas Conference
Greece is in need of a bold and radical constitutional revision on matters relating to transparency and accountability, New Democracy (ND) leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis said, speaking at the annual conference of International Transparency – Hellas.
This year, Greece slipped down to the 57th place in the World Economic Forum’s competitiveness Index from the 61st where it was ranked last year, Mitsotakis said, and criticized the government for lack of evaluation and transparency and for bringing back favouritism and corruption in the public sector.
Mitsotakis then referred to his party’s suggestion to revise article 16, which will open the way for the creation of private Universities; and reminded the audience of an earlier ND proposal to revise article 86, which covers minister accountability.
He also stressed the need for reinforcing the role of independent authorities and state control mechanisms and said that the government is currently moving in the opposite direction. Indicative of this, he added, is the fact that most public sector recruits last year were secondary education graduates instead of highly skilled personnel, which last year represented only 11% of the total number of recruits.
"This demonstrates the government’s priorities very clearly," Mitsotakis said.
