EU Commissioner Avramopoulos: We cannot go back to a Europe full of borders and checkpoints

“High unemployment rates among young people push them to adopt an attitude of rejection and confrontation vis-à-vis the social, economic and political establishment,” said European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos in an interview with Greek newspaper Ta Nea.

This matter is irrespective of whether a government abides by right or left political standards, he continued, but is instead a question of implementing responsible, socially sensitive policies aspiring to boost social cohesion.

Referring to freedom of movement within the Schengen zone, Avramopoulos underscored that any policy geared towards seclusion would be detrimental for the EU.

“The Schengen zone is the biggest tangible achievement of European integration. We cannot allow returning to a Europe full of borders and checkpoints,” he added.

Regarding the forthcoming European election, he said that this is a matter of great importance as it will determine the future of Europe.

“Every day, we need to send a loud message in support of our common European course by showing our respect to the principles of diversity and solidarity,” the Commissioner said, adding that this is also the message that needs to come through in preparation for the election.
