Migration and Asylum Minister Notis Mitarachi decided on Thursday that asylum service staff will henceforth work on two rotating shifts.
The new working hours will apply from this year and concern all employees, independent of their type of labour contract. The two shifts will be the morning shift, from 06:00 to 14:00, and the evening shift from 14:00 to 22:00.
According to a ministry announcement, Mitarachi's decision aims to effectively address the large backlog of pending asylum applications that has accumulated and to guarantee the smooth functioning of the asylum service.
Finally, the new system will contribute in the better management of additional staff that are expected to be added to the asylum service soon.
