SYRIZA leader Tsipras: Government making deliberate choice to restructure labour relations
Main opposition SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras on Tuesday criticised the government and accused it of taking advantage of the crisis in order to bring about a major restructuring of labour relations.
Tsipras made the statements during a video conference with the president of the Centre of Athens Labour Unions (EKA), Giorgos Mylonas, and respresentatives of supermarket and transport workers to discuss the support measures for labour.
He expressed fears that a lack of precautionary measures to support the economy, the labour force and enterprises will lead to an "extremely adverse state of affairs" when it comes to restarting the economy after the end of the pandemic, adding that this was "a fully deliberate political choice made by the government" since the means to support both labour and businesses were there.
SYRIZA's leader accused the government of adopting measures to support unemployment, rather than employment, in a manner unprecedented in the rest of Europe. "We are sounding the alarm over the huge difficulties we will be called upon to face collectively," he said.
