Men who murdered young British mother in Athens suburb left plentiful clues, police say
Police on Wednesday said that the perpetrators of the murder-robbery in the Athens suburb of Glyka Nera, in which a 20-year-old mother of British descent was strangled to death next to her 11-month-old baby, have left a wealth of evidence and clues that will lead to their arrest.
The three men broke into the house occupied by the young couple and their baby in the early hours of Tuesday morning, tying up and beating the 32-year-old husband and then torturing the young woman to make her reveal the location of their money and valuables.
Police believe the three men involved were probably acting on information that the couple had a large quantity of money in the house and quite likely have previous criminal records, while they have left a number of fingerprints and DNA evidence in the house, where they remained for some time.
Two teams of officers from the homicide and burglary departments are looking through the files of felons released from prison, especially recently, and are confident that the mistakes made by the ruthless criminals will lead to their location and arrest.
In addition to forensic evidence from the clothing of the 20-year-old and her husband and in various locations in the house, they also have video footage from security cameras in the area to determine the route they took, though the perpetrators managed to destroy an external video camera placed outside the couple's home and a camera set up by the couple to monitor the baby inside the house.
The autopsy of the young woman is expected to show the precise cause of death, which is believed to be by strangulation.
Police consider that the perpetrators probably had information about the recent sale of a piece of land by the couple and thought they would find a significant sum in the house. The 32-year-old also revealed that he had recently withdrawn a large amount to cover some expenses. The police are investigated people that either worked at the couple's home or knew about the specific sale.
The 32-year-old told police that the three men appeared fully ready to kill in order to find the money and that he had told them where it was hidden so they would go, and that he could hear his wife screaming and the baby crying while the men continued to ransack the house to find more money and jewellery.
