"The government is attempting to whitewash its responsibilities for the OPEKEPE scandal," he said in response to statements by Rural Development and Food Minister Kostas Tsiaras that a "period of cleansing has begun" and the minister's claim that the problems at OPEKEPE "are the result of deep-rooted and long-standing flaws in the political system".
"The OPEKEPE scandal confirms that, under New Democracy, immediately after the memorandums, there was an effort to bring back the system of corruption and clientelism that led to bankruptcy," Tsoukalas said, adding:
"New Democracy, coming to power, promised excellence, technocratic governance and seriousness but it deceived the people. It is governing with corruption and the arrogance of power. A cleansing can only come with political change."
