Hollande: Europe wants and can move forward

Europe wants and will move forward as long as it sets clear priorities for the good of its citizens, French President Francois Gollande said on Friday in a joint press conference with German Chancellor Angels Merkel, after an EU summit meeting in Bratislava.

He said security, the protection and prosperity of our citizens and the future of Europe’s youth are some of the priorities noted by Hollande. “We want to work united,” he said after the first summit without the participation of Britain.

Both Hollande and Merkel noted that the EU’s 27 have set a road map to regain people’s trust in the European structure and expressed their determination to deal with the critical issues by the 60th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome.

On her side, the German Chancellor described the situation in Europe “critical” after the result of the British referendum, but also because of other difficulties, but stated that the 27 leaders agreed to tackle the issues and give a new impetus to the EU by March 2017.

Both leaders also expressed their support for the priorities set by European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker in his recent speech in the European Parliament on the state of the European Union. They said there must be more solidarity on migration and that measures taken must be implemented. Hollande and Merkel also admitted that unemployment levels remain high and noted the need to bolster growth and employment though increased investments.
