University student hospitalized after being beaten, possibly by Golden Dawn members
A 24-year-old university student was beaten viciously in the area of Ellinoroson on Friday (31/03/2017) afternoon by individuals who initial evidence suggests were members of neo-Nazi party Golden Dawn (GD).
The student was transferred to Erythros Stavros (Red Cross) hospital where he is being treated for his injuries.
According to initial evidence, the perpetrators were retaliating for an attack with sledgehammers and paint against the party’s offices on nearby Mesogion Avenue by unknown assailants. Police sources say there is no evidence to suggest the student was involved in the attack against GD’s offices and was probably made a target because of a backpack he was carrying.
Police also said the victim is not in a condition to give evidence on the attack. The incident was reported by a local resident who witnessed the assault and called police’s emergency response unit. According to initial evidence, the attackers were sitting at a café when they saw the student walk by, attacked him, hurled abuse and beat him until he was unconscious. They then stole his backpack which contained a camera, a mobile phone and several documents and disappeared.
Police’s security department is investigating the incident.
