Wildfire in forest alongside Nestos River in Xanthi under control
A forest fire broke out on Friday in woodland growing along the banks of the Nestos River in the Topiros municipality, south of Xanthi was under control, the fire brigade reported.
The fire brigade deployed a large force to put out the fire on the ground and several PZL fire-fighting aircraft to drop water on the flames from the air.
The prompt intervention of fire-fighting forces helped to prevent more extensive destruction of one of the most beautiful virgin forests of Greece and one of the major riverside forests in Europe.
The fire, which began when embers from Thursday's fire were rekindled, burned through five hectares before it was put out.
