Tsipras: We are facing a historical deja vu

"We are facing a historical deja vu," Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said on Sunday on the sidelines of the Peace Forum in Paris.

"It is worth seeing these comparisons today and fighting, despite our differences, for Europe, because history cannot wait and when it is repeated it is very cruel to us," he said.

"Europe was rebuilt after two world wars, grounded on social justice, labour protection, gender equality, infrastructure and network upgrading, peace and cooperation among the peoples," he underlined.

"The far-right and the nationalists have their own plan that is clear and timeless. Divide society, target specific social groups, cultivate fear, invoke a national grandeur that fits no one beyond the chosen ones. Both Hitler and Mussolini appealed to troubled societies, where fear and despair prevailed," the prime minister said.

"Fascism and Nazism are inhumane ideologies, but they are powerful because they appeal to instincts. Under conditions of war, the survival instinct prevails. After the war, however, the defeated one has the instinct of revenge. This is what the demagogues of the period exploited," Tsipras underlined.
