Policemen allegedly involved in Kostopoulos' death released after testifying to examining magistrate

The police officers allegedly involved in the death of Zak Kostopoulos were released without bail or other conditions after their testimony to the examining magistrate handling the case on Wednesday.

The policemen had been summoned to testify on charges of inflicting of fatal injury.

The case against them alleged that they injured the victim 'by kicking him, stepping on his hand at length and stepping on his foot, causing bodily harm due to the victim's condition." According to the prosecution, the combination of these injuries, along with the many and various other injuries sustained by the victim as a result of the actions of the various defendants in the case, as well as the stress response these triggered within the victim, resulted in ischaemic damage to his heart, "which is causally linked to the above injuries and led to his death."

The police officers claimed they were acting in the line of duty and in accordance with the procedures outlined in police manuals for handcuffing.
