Mitsotakis on Polytechnic uprising: We honour, we move forward

The Polytechnic uprising is not a museum exhibit, nor something that concluded with the overturning of the tyranny but which continues to be relevant, with the demand for "bread, education, freedom" travelling through history and the slogan "all united" continuing to inspire the present time, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in his statement for the 49th anniversary of the Polytechnic uprising in 1973.

"All the things that the people and the students demanded in 1973 are today becoming steps of progress in a democratic, strongly shielded and dynamic country, which knows how to surmount crises and with citizens who feel that the State is on their side," he added.

"Forty-nine years ago, a better education was the spearhead of the anti-dictatorship struggle and today, universities and schools are welcoming this historic anniversary with modern education programmes, with digital classes, international collaborations and openness, which link their studies with employment. The student, more mature than ever, reject the blind violence and the illegal actions and restore academic freedoms in their areas.

"The Polytechnic uprising was a moment of national pride and too big to fit into the petty political party aims that followed. Because those three days, so saturated with significance, swept away the old divisions like a wave. They laid the foundations for a new unity, on which was built the most complete democracy that Greece has ever known. So, 49 years later, our common duty is to protect and deepen it. We remember, we honour, we move forward!" Mitsotakis concluded.
