Stores will be open on Sunday for winter sales, on a suggested schedule of 11:00-18:00, although owners have a choice to remain closed as well.
Supermarkets will not be open in general.
Winter sales began on January 13 and will end on Friday, February 28.
As Piraeus Chamber of Commerce & Industry president Vassilis Korkidis told Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA), "All indications show that despite the economic fatigue of the holiday season, the winter sales will fulfil expectations of store owners and consumers, and transactions will move at a much better rate than last year - the aim being that turnover in retail for January-February 2025 exceeds the 6 billion euro total of last year's period."
Korkidis said the expectation is realistic, given that there was a 6.4% rise in private sector wages and a drop of 9% in unemployment, showng less pressure on family budgets.
Athens Trade Association (ESA) vice-president Makis Savvidis, also vice-president of the Greek E-Commerce Association (Greca), there is enough merchandise while prices, especially in clothing and shoes will surpass expectations. He noted that the unusually high temperatures did not help store owners, who plan to get rid of accumulated stock. Despite the high turnover at large stores and malls during the holidays, the level of enthusiasm was not high in the market overall and turnover appears lower than in previous years.
On the other hand, NielsenIQ data found that supermarkets closed 2024 with a 3.6% growth and total sales of 14.8 billion euros.
