Greek police arrested seven in illegal adoption ring
Greek police arrested seven people in connection with an illegal adoption ring that sold babies from Bulgaria to desperate couples in Greece.
On Wednesday, the police said that they had arrested some members of the ring in the northern Greek city of Trikala, after police officers posed as an adoption-seeking couple.
They said that they were able to "buy" a 21-day-old baby boy for €10,000.
The police suspect that the seven people arrested have organised at least 10 other illegal adoptions in Greece.
The baby boy's Bulgarian mother, a Greek lawyer and notary public and two other Greek national are among those taken into police custody.
Procedural delays in the adoption process in Greece is usually the cause for illegal adoptions, as some couples wait up to 10 years in order to get a baby.
