Former ND deputy sentenced for molesting three youths

Former deputy Nikos Georgiadis was sentenced to a 28-months suspended jail term over the case of a pederasty ring discovered nearly nine years ago in Moldavia, when he was working at the United Nations.

The court found Georgiadis guilty for repeatedly molesting three young people in exchange for money. He was also ordered to pay a fine of 20,000 euros.

Georgiadis, who was elected on a New Democracy ticket, said he was innocent and claimed there was no incriminating evidence against him. He said he would fight the decision at appeal and had faith in the justice system.

In a statement on the decision, the prime minister's office criticised the main opposition leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis for "the friends he defends" and mocked what it called the attempt by ND to label the case a political persecution.
