The Turkish issue on the table of the informal council of EU foreign ministers
The informal Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union will conclude on Friday in Berlin. The debate on Turkey is expected to take place this morning and, according to EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, the main objective is to show strong solidarity with the threatened EU member states, while trying to reduce tension and allow dialogue and negotiation to address issues that are very complex.
Borrell also stressed that after the worrying turn of events in August, it was agreed to send a clear message that Turkey must stop illegal drilling activities and work to de-escalate the situation while all options are on the table.
German Foreign Minister Haiko Maas has also said that he is very concerned about the escalation of tension and provocations in the Eastern Mediterranean, and warned that if a diplomatic solution to the European Council is not found, this will be extremely problematic for the Union's dialogue with Turkey.
