Tsipras: We will fight to ensure loss does not become a habit in this country
SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras blasted the government for its management of the coronavirus pandemic this past year in his New Year's message on Thursday.
"Our country had to face the pandemic with leaders who never believed in the value of the social state," he said, "and when the pandemic arrived, they unfortunately did not change priorities."
The main opposition leader said 2021 would be a difficult year both because of the pandemic and because of having to defend sovereign rights. "Only if we proceed with our values to guide us can we overcome all challenges and difficulties," he said.
He said that his party thanked all those who contributed in several ways to make sure services ran and those who also helped their neighbors. "To all those we owe support and a great thank you, and a commitment, especially to the families who lost members - the commitment that we will fight from the very start of the New Year to ensure that loss does not become a habit in this country. That more people are not lost just because they don't have money to do the coronavirus test in a timely manner."
Taking a lesson from the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution for Independence, he said, democracy, liberty, solidarity and justice will point the way.
